ESTONIA – PM Andrus Ansip shows that he can adapt his language to suit his audience. On an official visit to Washington DC*, which is in the United States (of America), he compared Estonia’s plucky cyber-defence efforts with the action-packed antics of Bruce Willis in Die Hard IV. So expect the new NATO cyber-defence college to have a massive budget, be located in a building that has seen better days and be rather dull in spite of lots of the latest computer technology.
LATVIA – the Constitutional Court refuses to let a small detail like the constitution get in the way of its deliberations and okays the ratification of the border treaty with Russia, meaning Latvia finally drops its claim to the Abrene region which was part of Latvia 1920-1940. The court concluded that surrender of Abrene “does not infringe Latvian state continuity, as it is affected by the will of the country itself and acceptance by the other countries.” So if it’s ultimately down to “the will of the country” (which presumably means whatever the mandated government decides) why bother with a constitutional court?
LITHUANIA – the number of jobseekers increased by 7.3% during the last month while the number of vacancies increased by more than 20% during the third quarter.

(*the DC bit is so that it is not confused with Washington, Tyne and Wear)
